Another focus of my Nutrition Plans will often start with Ayurveda, the ancient Traditional Medicine of India.
Ayurveda focuses on all areas of health, including diet, lifestyle, exercise, detoxification, sleep, and the mind.
The philosophy of Ayurveda is that health exists when there is a balance between the energies that govern the body, the three ‘doshas’, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and the 6 tastes – Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Pungent and Astringent.
Vata ‘wind – momentum’
Influences the movement of blood through the circulatory system, breathing, the delivery of nutrients to the cells, and the removal & excretion of waste products. The easy flow and motion of thoughts depend on vata.
Pitta ‘fire – metabolism’
Presides over digestion, and the transformation of nutrients into absorbable energy building blocks. Enables the ability to absorb ideas and impressions.
Pitta ‘fire – metabolism’
Presides over digestion, and the transformation of nutrients into absorbable energy building blocks. Enables the ability to absorb ideas and impressions.
Kapha ‘earth – fluids’
Governs weight, the lubrication of the joints and lungs, and the formation of fluids, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive tissues. Provides structure and stability, both physically and psychologically.
Ayurveda recognizes that there are six tastes, all of which either balance or aggravate each dosha.
Sweet
Enriches the complexion, heals wounds and ulcers, purifies the blood and provides strength to the body.
Sour
Expels wind from the bowels, gathers together waste impurities to be secreted, promotes the healthy flow of bile.
Salty
Stimulates saliva production, supporting digestion, absorption, assimilation, and elimination. Moistens the body, helps to maintain water electrolyte balance and soothes the nervous system.
Pungent
Develops other flavours, sparks digestive fire, heats, dries and eliminates excess mucous, clears stagnation and congestion.
Bitter
Enhances the release of digestive juices and enzymes, deeply cleanses as it purges wastes and toxins. Supports the liver, clears congestion and tones the muscles and skin.
Astringent
Absorbs excess moisture helping to compress and hold tissues together. Cleanses the mucous membranes, improves absorption, and helps to heal wounds and alleviate coughs.
