The Potato Hack

The humble spud has taken a rap over the past few years, and lets be honest you never would have thought that the potato ‘king of carbs’ and weight loss would ever share the same sentence.

But modern science now shows that simple diets high in fiber create an intestinal microbiome ‘eco-system’ that is highly diverse and stable. As Hippocrates the ‘father’ of medicine once said “all disease begins in the gut”, essentially we are only as healthy as our gut bacteria.

Cold potatoes provide resistant starch, a type of fibre and prebiotic, that ‘resists digestion in the small intestine’, travelling to the colon to feed our good bacteria. Eating only potatoes for a short term can serve as a reset. You eliminate the foods that may trigger inflammation, whilst feeding your good bacteria. This allows time for your gut flora to recuperate and your intestines to recover.

“The potato hack is a short-term intervention (3-5 days) where one eats nothing but potatoes. This short mono-food experiment will strengthen your immune system and provide you with all of the nutrition you need to remain energetic, sleep great, and, as a side-effect, lose weight. The potato hack will help you develop a new relationship with food, hunger, taste, and yourself” Tim Steele, Author of ‘The Potato Hack’.

A large part of understanding the potato hack derives from the feeling you will get when your brain takes a break from flavour, whilst at the same time your belly is satiated, consequently shutting off your hunger hormones.
